Who can get Estonian Citizenship by Birth?

Children born to at least one Estonian citizen parent: A kid is eligible for Estonian citizenship by birth if at least one of their parents was an Estonian citizen at the time of birth.

Children born to at least one parent who has an Estonian residence permit are eligible for citizenship by birth if at least one parent has a current residence permit in Estonia at the time of the child’s birth and has lived there legally for at least five years prior to the child’s birth.

Stateless children born in Estonia: If a child is born in Estonia and neither of their parents is a citizen of any country, the child is eligible for Estonian citizenship by birth.

What is the process?

If you meet the requirements for Estonian citizenship by birth, the procedure is not too difficult. The steps you must take are as follows:

• Obtain a birth certificate: The Estonian Population Registry will issue you a birth certificate if you were born there. This document demonstrates your citizenship.
• Register your citizenship: Within a year of your birth, you must register your citizenship with the Estonian embassy or consulate in the country where you currently reside if you were born outside of Estonia but at least one of your parents is an Estonian citizen.
• Obtain an Estonian passport: After obtaining your birth certificate or declaring your citizenship, you may submit an application for an Estonian passport. You can complete this at a nearby Estonian embassy or consulate.
