French Citizenship by Marriage

After being wed for at least four years and residing in France for at least three years, foreigners who marry French nationals are qualified to petition for French citizenship through marriage. To be eligible for French citizenship through marriage, however, additional conditions must be completed.

Requirements

• Marriage to a French citizen: In order to obtain French citizenship through marriage, you must be married to a French national. A PACS (pacte civil de solidarité) or civil union is insufficient
• Residence in France: After marrying a French national, you must have resided in France for at least three years. If you have extensive understanding of the French language and culture, you might be able to cut this requirement in half to two years
• You must show that you are integrating into French society by proving your understanding of French language and culture as well as your respect for French laws and values
• Good character: You must have a clean criminal record and be able to demonstrate that you are of good character
• Stable and continuous relationship: You must provide evidence that your relationship with your French spouse is stable and continuous

Process

1. Verify your eligibility by looking over the requirements for French citizenship acquired by marriage
2. A clean criminal record certificate, your marriage certificate, proof of residency in France, evidence of your integration into French society, and all other documents required to support your application should be gathered
3. Prepare your application by filling out the form and including all necessary attachments
4. Send your application: Send your application to the prefecture or consulate of France that is closest to you.
5. Attend an interview: Once your application is processed, you will be invited to attend an interview with French immigration officials to discuss your application.
6. Pass the French language and culture test: As part of the application process, you will need to demonstrate your knowledge of French language and culture by passing a test.
7. Wait for a decision: After the interview and language test, you will need to wait for a decision on your application. Processing times vary depending on the workload of the immigration authorities.
