The Process

The process of obtaining Hungarian citizenship by naturalization typically involves the following steps:

1. Residency requirement: Ensure that you have legally resided in Hungary for the required period (eight years) and have a valid residence permit.
2. Language and knowledge examinations: Prepare for and pass the Hungarian language and cultural knowledge examinations. These exams assess your language proficiency and understanding of Hungarian culture and the legal system.
3. Application submission: Gather the necessary documents and submit your application for Hungarian citizenship by naturalization to the regional office of the Office of Immigration and Nationality (OIN). The application form and required documents may include proof of identity, proof of legal residence, language and cultural knowledge examination certificates, and evidence of means of subsistence.
4. Background check: The OIN conducts a background check to verify your criminal record and moral character.
5. Decision and oath of allegiance: If your application is approved, you will be invited to take an oath of allegiance to Hungary and be granted Hungarian citizenship.
