Norwegian citizenship by birth

If at least one parent is a citizen of Norway at the time of the kid’s birth, the child is granted citizenship by birth. Regardless of where they are born, the child will instantly acquire Norwegian citizenship. In some situations, though, such as when the kid is born to unmarried parents or when it is born outside of Norway, there are specific exclusions and additional criteria.

How to obtain citizenship through birth in Norway

At least one parent of the child must have been a Norwegian citizen at the time of birth for the child to be granted citizenship by birth. Regardless of where they are born, the child will instantly acquire Norwegian citizenship. This is a list of the process:

1. Verify parental citizenship. Confirm that at least one of the child’s parents is a Norwegian citizen. If both parents are Norwegian citizens, the child will automatically acquire Norwegian citizenship.
2. Register the birth of the child. If the child is born outside of Norway, you should register their birth there or at the closest embassy or consulate of Norway.
3. Provide the required paperwork. the child’s birth certificate, evidence of the parents’ Norwegian citizenship, and any other documents the Norwegian authorities may specify, should be submitted.
4. Obtain a passport for Norway. You can, if you’d like, apply for the child to get a Norwegian passport when the child’s citizenship has been verified. This will serve as official proof of the child’s citizenship in Norway.

Application and Documentation

Typically, the paperwork needed to get Norwegian citizenship via birth includes:

1. Birth certificate for the child. a certified copy of the child’s birth certificate, which should include the child’s name, date of birth, and place.
2. Proof of Norwegian citizenship for the parents. a current Norwegian passport, a certificate of Norwegian citizenship, or other official documents that demonstrate that at least one of the child’s parents is a citizen of Norway.
3. Certificate of marriage, if applicable. A certified copy of the child’s parents’ marriage license may be needed if they are married.
4. Evidence of identification. Valid identity cards for both parents, such as passports or national ID cards.
5. Additional paperwork. Additional documentation, such as proof of residency, evidence of a parent-child relationship, or other supporting documents, may be required depending on the circumstances.

Dual Nationality

Norway often forbids dual citizenship. This means that in order to maintain your former citizenship after obtaining Norwegian citizenship, you must usually renounce it or seek authorization to do so.
